Eight-eight-year-old Levi Ganges died of Apoplexy on this date, September 13th, in 1846 and was buried at Bethel Burying Ground. It is thought that Mr. Ganges was one of the 118 kidnapped individuals that survived the Middle Passage on a slave ship and were rescued by the American navy ship U.S.S. Ganges. There is little primary source documentation on Levi. It appears that he opened a banking account in August of 1831 at The Philadelphia Saving Fund Society. The Ganges’ survivors were initially indentured to families in Philadelphia and surrounding counties. For the full story please go to http://www.ushistory.org/laz/news/pl1105.htm. Research is ongoing.
